LONDON, March 31

At a Liberal banquet in London last night, the Marquis of Hartington delivered a speech in which he declared that Mr. Gladstone's support of Mr. Piirnell had further dhided the Liberal party. The " round table conference " had, he stated, been without result, and it had beeu adjourned for an indefinite period. The Unionist-Liberal would continue to support the Government while they upheld ihe law iv Ireland.

Nelson did a splendid two-mile gallop at Fuindwick this morning. He continues first favorite for the Sydney Gold Cup.

MELBOURNE, March 31.

A statement has been published here showing that the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company are losing at the rate of £40.000 per annum by the reductions made last year in the telegraphic rates.

At the banquet to Robert Harper, Postmaster General Derham stated that while he v»'o\\M Rfatffy welcome a feasible and prudent scheme for acqniriug the telegraph cables, such a gigantic undertaking as that proposed by Sir Julius Vogel needs to be most carefully scrutinised, lest the colonies be precipitated into a possible mistake. Mr. Derham also said he could not favor a penny postage between England and the Colonies.

The Victoria Racing Club has decided to add £500 more to the Melbourne Cvp — making £2500 in all— besides a trophy valued at 100 guineas. The Autumn Meeting in future will include four days' racing, and added money. The Newmarket Handicap will be increased to £500.
