AUCKLAND, March 7. * Yesterday afternoon at Panmure a house containing 12 rooms was burned down. The fire was caused through a defective chimney. The Kawakawa coal-miners struck against the reduction of 15 per cent. They offer to accept a reduction of 5 per cent.

GISBORNE, March 7.

A fire broke out this morning in the stables of the Albion Club Hotel and spread to the hotel and shops adjoining as far as Adams', bookseller. The Loan and Mercantile buildings have just (10 a.m.) caught. The buildings on the opposite side caught fire, but were speedily put out.

OHRISTCHUECH, March 7. The Tainui sailed for London on Saturday with a full cargo. The difficulty as to auditing the Harbor Board accounts has been settled. It appears that the Government demand to audit the Board's accounts was made under the Harbor Boards Amendment Act. The Provincial District Auditor, Mr. J. Olliver, deemed himself to be in full possession of his Excellency's warrant under the act of 1878, and therefore declined to be superseded by the act of 1886. The question has been settled, bis Excellency having forwarded a notification to the Provincial District Auditor that he has formally revoked his appointment under the act of 1878. The official letter Mr. Olliver received contains the following passage :—: — Your removal from office is not in consequence of any want of fitness on your part, "but solely for the purpose of giving effect to section 14 of " The Harbors Act, 1878, Amendment Act, 1886."

DUNEDIN, March 7.

A fire at Lawrence destroyed the premises of Nicol, storeekeeper ; Middlem's, blacksmith ; and Wilson & Co., storekeepers. Tbe latter were insured for £1250 in tbe Union and Equitable.

INVEKCAEGILL, March 7.

The Stella returned after a thorough search of the islands in Foveaux Straits. No trace of wreckage or men was found.
