The statement published by the Daily News that the Imperial Government apprehend war between Frauce and Germany being imminent is generally discredited

Mr. Garrick, Agent-General for Queensland, is conferring with other Australian Agents-General regarding the statements made in a speech by Treppel, to the Chamber of Deputies, as to the French in the New Ht brides.

The Austrian Government is preparing for the mobilization of the AustroHungarian army.

It is officially announced that the statement published by the Daily News that the Imperial Government fear war between France and Germany is imminent, was published without the permission of the Government, and is without foundation.

The Order of the Grand Cross of St. Michael and St. George has been conferred on Sir George Strachan, the new Governor of Hong Kong. PARIS, January 24. In the Chamber of Deputies to-day, Treppel made a statement to the effect that Austria is mobilizing her troops. ADEN, January 24. News has been received from Someinli that nn Abyssinian force has attacked and completely routed the Harrars troops, and has occupied the town of the Ameer of Harrar. The Ameer, however, escaped. BRISBANE, January 2.5. Howard Smith & Sons' Barrabool was washed ashore in the Brisbane River to day, and a boat which was lowered from the vessel swamped, and two of the occupants were drowned. The Barrabool has since been floated off without damage being done.
