ISLAND BAY RACES.

.The following is the Post's report of the race for the Island Bay Cup. ISLAND BAY PARK CUP HANDICAP. Of 400 soys ; second horse 50 soys, and third horse 25 soys from the stake. One mile and a-half. Hoskin's br ra Rumour, 4yrs, 7st 101b (Sutherland) 3 All the nine on the card started. Waitiri was served up a very warm favourite at evens, Rumour, Tit Bit, and ' Silence being next in demand. The start was delayed a long time by Revoke refusing to join her horses. Waitiri was also very fractious. The starter, who was very patient, at length seized a favourable opportunity and got them well away. Silence showed in front for a moment, and then Revoke rushed by him and took a good lead, followed by Tit Bit. As they came by tbe : stand the first time Revoke bad half a length lead of Tigredia, Pearl third, and Tit Bit fourth, the rest being close up. After rounding the sea turn Pearl showed in front and at Holmes' had a clear length to the good, Tit Bit being second, and Waitiri, who had improved her position, now lying third. At the north gate the favourite joined Pearl, and the two rounded into the straight together, where they were soon joined by Tit Bit on the outside. A ' splendid race ensued between these three, bat at the distance Pearl was beaten, and then as Brown and Derrett both drew their whips simultaneously, there was a ' hash of excitemeut as the two great horsemen settled down to fight out the finish. 1 It was a grand set to, but Waitiri just got home by a head, Rumour being a length away, third, and Pearl fourth. Time, 2tnin 39sec. Dividend, £2 4s. A protest was entered by DerretC, the rider of Tit Bit,~ on the ground that Brown bad hit Tit Bit over the head. The Stewards heard evidence at once, and the protest was disallowed.
