WELLINGTON, January 8.

In a Supplementary Gazette issued this morning, the appoiutment is notified of Thomas Humphries as ConimLssioner under the Native Land Administration Act, of last session, for Taranaki district. January 10. Charles Hercock, aged 70, committed suicide at' Dalefield on Saturday by drowning. He had recently married a young wife about twenty years of age, CHRISTGHUROH, January 8.

The session of the Educational Institute was concluded yesterday. It was decided to hold the next annual meeting at Nelson in January, 1888. The report of the committee on the standard syllabus, as amended by the council, was referred to the district institute, and will be brought forward next year. The principal clauses of the report stated that the number of compulsory subjects included in the syllabus are excessive, aud that the compulsory subjects for individual examination and individual passes be restricted to reading (including explanation), spelling, dictation, writing, arithmetic, and composition.

Yesterday afternoon a deputation of unemployed interviewed Sir Robert Stout, who promised to see it work could be found for deserving men, but said that nothing could be done for those who had wasted their earnings in drink. He con sidered it was not the function of the General Government to fiud work for the unemployed, as that should be done by local bodies. Sir Robert goes to Dunedin to day.

TIMARU, January 8.

At a largely attended meeting of the Timaru Woollen Company, it was decided that the directors be requested to go into liquidation at once, and re-construct the company. The company has about .£IOOO of present creditors, and find it impossible to carry on under the present arrangements.
