THE VOLCANIC DEPOSITS AT MAKETU.

(PER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.)

AUCKLAND, July 7. A Maketu telegram states that, as a result of the volcanic deposits, everything is in a very bnd state. Cattle and horses are flying in all directions. Settlers blame the Government for not appointing a commissioner to visit the Bay of Plenty to see that the wants of Europeans and natives are attendpd to, and that they are not allowed to 6tarve during the next three months.

Professor Hutton returned to Uotorua last night, after five days' inspection of the effects of the eruption on the Galatea side. Ho first visited Botomahana, and then attempted to reach Tarawera mountain from the eastern side, but did not get withiu ten miles of the place. He states the crater is right on top of Tarawera proper. With a glass he made out two steaming streaks down the side of the mountain, which he believes to be lava streams. Professor Hutton has not yet met the Auckland professors, who are in camp at Kaitereria, collecting data, but are expected back to-day. The professional trio will then hold a conference. Professor Hutton is properly reticent as to his opinions until he has communicated with the Government, but he apprehends no further danger. He thinks tbe ascent of Tarawera will be a perfect Bummer expedition.
