OPUNAKE

(FROM OTJR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

On Friday Dr. J. Forster Wanstall delivered a recitation of "Enoch Arden" before an appreciative bnt small audience. Before the recitation (which was divided into two parts) "was delivered, the doctor gave an exceedingly able and well-delivered address on the life and works of Tennyson, which he has apparently made a subject of considerable study. Although Enoch Avden is well known, the learned doctor succeeded in securing the attention oi the ' audience all through, and, with the exception of one or two ill-mannered interruptions, 'a pin could have been beard to fait during, the deliTery of the recitation; ' The more" touching parts of the narrative were admirably rendered, tending to show the study the doctor had devoted to his subject, although he stated that it was eleven years ago since he read the narrative. Dr. Wanstall'B first appearance before an Opunake audience was an undoubted suocess, so far as bis own efforts are concerned, and we trust it will be' the first of a series of entertainments of a like character conducted by him., The A.O. String Band and Messrs. Lusk and IJ. MicJdJeton assisted also with music and songs respectively.

The Education Board have voted the sum of £10 for material for alterations and improvements to the master's residence, Mr. Elwin having offered to find' the necessary labor, and' the board has also sanctioned the suggestion of the committee to have the platforms reduced, upon which the desks are placed.

The petition re harbor endowments to the Council and House of Representatives has at last been forwarded to Major Atkinson for presentation. It is to be hoped! we shall hear more of it soon.

Mr. J. Stewart, Who has been moving with others in the matter' of having returned to lessees of native lands certain deposits which they claimed had been paid in excess of rent .legally due from 1 them, received a notice from Mr. Uarton who has been acting for them that the Public Trustee had decided to return the. money claimed. This will be good news to those who have agitated so long m' the matter ; in some cases, therefore, these lessees will have possession of their lands for nine months before the lease legally commences.

The quarterly meeting of the Licensing Committee will be held during the second week in September. Mr. S. Proper has given notice Df bis intention of applying for the removal of his license for the Empire Hotel to the premises known as the Club, for which a license was applied for at the anuual meeting, but refused. As there are several legal points at, issue, the sitting of the committee will no doubt be an interesting one. ' ' August 22nd. '
