BATTLE OF GAKDAL.
CAIEO, January 23.
"While fighting was proceeding on the left other parts of the square were firing heavily on the enemy, who were finally repulsed, leaving eight hundred dead and numbers wounded. The Hussars have since occupied the enemy's position at Abukel, and Colonel Stewart is now advancing on Metemneh. The_ British loss is nine officers killed (including Colonel Burnaby) and nine wounded (including Captains Viscount St. Vincent, and Earl Airlie), and 65 men killed and 85 wounded. Colonel Stewart believes his victory will dishearten the enemy, and that in future the fighting will be less obstinate on their part.
