Tbe public schools reassemble on Monday morning, after the Christmas vacation.

An effort is being made ti* start a naval artillery corps at Now Plymouth. Such a corps ought to succeed. There should be such a corps at every port in the colony.

A quartz reef said to yield stone containing 00 ounces of gold to the ton is reported to have been discoved on private property about 30 miles from Blenheim, but no further particulars are given.

The first, meeting of the new Government Insurance Board was to be held at Wellington this morning, Mr. Ballance, in the absence of the Colonial Treasurer, acting as president.

The secretary to the Hawera Cricket Club has received a telegram from the secretary of the New Plymouth Cricket Club stating that the latter's team will be unable to play on Wednesday, as was contempla'ed ; but he will endeavor to arrange lat.er on.

The Hawera School Committee reminds the householders of their usual meeting to be held on Monday evening next. Meetings will be held of all school committees in tbe education district on that evening, at 7.30 p.m. We are requested to state tint the Manaia retiring committee meet at 7 p.m. to receive chairman's report, etc.

The Wellington Post doubts the likelihood of the delegates sent Home to negotiate for the construction of the East and West Coasts and Nelson railways being successful, and says the next move will probably be a demaud for a colonial guarantee to-any company that will undertake the construction of these railways.

The Feilding Star states that the directors of the Makino Butter and Cheese Factory Lave decided to start cheesemaking until the new separator they have sent for can be obtained. The total number of shares in connection with this factory is 200, of which about 180 are taken up. The company pays 3}d per gallon for the new milk, and sells the skim milk back, to those of the vendors who wish, at Id a gallon.

The Catholic Literary Society has recently opened rooms in Wellington. At the opening ceremony, the Bishop and others spoke. Mr. W. M. Maskell, one of the speakers, said '* he should like it to be understood that people of all shades of political opinion would meet there on a level footing. They would be glad to receive a Catholio whether he supported Major Atkinson, Sir Julius Vogel, Sir George Grey, or — if he could stomach him — Mr. Stout ; all would alike be welcome."

It is rumored in political circles (says the Wellington Post) that the Imperial Government is willing, if New Zealand thinks that its own affairs do not afford sufficient r.cope for its energies, to allow it to take charge of and administer the affairs of Fiji. The cost of Government ,in that colony is understood to impose a considerable strain on the Imperial purse, and Lord Derby has indicated that he would be quite willing to transfer this to the New Zealand Treasury, and compensate this colony for the loss of Samoa by giving it Fiji. The annual balance-sheet of the public Institute and Library has been made up, and shows that the total receipts for the year were £83. Of this amount, £17 10s was received as proceeds of tbe concert in aid of the funds. There are only 16 subscribers on the list, although the library contains 432 volumes, and 536 were passed through subscribers' hands during the year. We hear that it is probable that the annual rate oi subscription may shortly be reduced. We, presume that tbe balance-sheet will be pn.blishcd in tbe usual course.

At the Wellington Theatre the other evening, a number of patients from the Mount Viow Lunatic Asylum were present, having been given free tickets. A patient writes to the New Zealand Times in acknowledgement, atid observes loftily — " We felt highly flattered when we were accommodated with seats in the private boxes, as we understood that those places were only meant for such as the Queen, the Duchess of Marlborougb, and the Lord 3ol.insbroke. Not that we are above sitting with those kind of people — not at all ; and I hope that the next company which visits Wellington will follow the example of Miss Genevieve Ward. If '.£o, lam sure we shall ever have canse to remember them."
