(united press association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The assumption of the Government of New Zealand by Sir James Prendergast, Chiel' Justice, is gazetted. AUCKLAND, This Day. The steamship Australia arrived with the San Francisco mail at eleven o'clock last night. The City Council contemplate an enlargement of the city to introduce the electric light, using the city water supply as motive power instead of steam. 30,000 shares in the Union Oil, Soap, and Candle Company have already been applied for. A seaman ou board the cutter Stag was lost overboard, off the Kawau, on Saturday night. James Walker, aged 15 j'ears, a settler's son, was arrested for a rape- on child 10 years old. Mr. Neil McLaughlau, assistant purser of the Manapori, died just as the ship left port, while being taken up the wharf in a cab by Dr. Goldsbro to the hospital. Death resulted from heart disease and ung disease . WANGANUI, This Day. A boy named Connell, aged eleven years, was charged on remand with breaking into Mrs. Mullin's honse, and stealing a sum of money, was sentenced to-day to three days imprisonment, till ascertained from the Government where to send him, and committed to a reformatory four years. At the quarterly sitting of the District Court, opened to-day by Judge Hardcastle, only one criminal case was heard. Karaipa te Puki, a native, sentenced at the last sittings to six months' imprisonment for forgery, pleaded guilty to the charge of attempted escape from gaol, and was sentenced to three months' imprisonment. Two defaulting jurors were fined 40s. each. A slight shock of earthquake was felt here at half-past eleven on Saturday night. Direction N. to S. INVERCARGILL. June 23. The charge against T. Booth, for putting names on the AVallace electoral roll without sufficient authority, was called on at the Supreme Court to-day. Mr. Stout, for the defence, submitted that the certificate granted to Booth in the Election Petition Court would relieve him from iudictment. The Judge admitted the difficulty, and reserved the point. Afterwards, the Court and the counsel engaged agreed that the proceedings should be stayed in the case of Booth. OAMARU, This Day. The football match between Timaru and Oamaru on Saturday last was drawn in consequence of one of the Timaru players, named Craig, ineetiug with an accident, necessitating his removal to the hospital. While doing a run, ho was collared, and dislocated his hip • joint. Play was then stopped, the score being — Timaru, three goals ; Oamam, one try. The enquiry into the circumstances attending the death of Derritt) purser of the Grufton, will be held to-day. PALMEKSTON NORTH, This Day. A man named White was drowned in Mauawatu river, near Palmerstou, on Saturday evening. Ho was crossing at the ford, and, it is supposed, got into a quicksand. The body has not yet been recovered. ASHBURTON, This Day. A search party, consisting of sixty-one residents, have been out searching for the missing man, Anderson, but without success. It is thought his remains will never be found. DUNEDIN, This Day. There was a full house at the Princess Theatre on Saturday night to witness the wrestling match between Professor Miller and Slade, of Timaru. On first coming together, a good deal of time was occupied in getting hold, Miller having to make all play. While gripping his opponent by the shoulders, Miller threw him, without any tripping, by sheer strength: Slade was taken by surprise ; but the fall was a very pretty one. On the second time, | Miller feinted as though attempting to trip his antagonist ; and Slade back' hauled lnui very neatly. The third fall was secured by Miller, who threw Slade (who is a big, powerful man) clean over his head. The fourth bout occupied most time of any ; and Miller oross-buttocked his man, thus securing the necessary three falls. The stakes were M'2"> a-side. A Chinaman who was missing from Waitahuna has been found by a constable in a hut ou the ranges. He had little or no clothing on, and there were marks on his neck as if he had attempted suicide. It is understood that he was confined at the asylum at Hokilika six years ago.
