THE PROMISED LAND SALE .

We desire to point out to the authorities the very Beriuus injury which is being done to those settlors in and near Opu-

nake who have taken up sections and built houses and shops there, "with a view either of buying land or of supplying settlers who may purchase. Neither the Maori leases nor the Crown lands have yet been dealt with ; and the authorities do not appear to recognise the fact that, having laid off and sold a township eighteen months ago, they are morally bound to sec that those .who invested and settled there, relying on the good faith of the Government, who promised to open up land near there as soon as possible, have a right to claim the fulfilment of those promises. The Crown lands guide, for April, promises that the Taungatara block and other land shall be sold in June or July. Unless advertised within the current week this promise must also be broken, as the Land Act requires at least a month's notice to be given before land can be offered in the market. Meanwhile we hear that some Opunake settlers have been already starved out, and that more soon will be unless the authorities bestir themselves.
