The Governor-General, Sir Bernard Freyberg, and Lady Freyberg, are visiting Australia. They expect to return to New Zealand on December 18. During their absence the Chief Justice (the Right Hon. Sir Humphrey O’Leary, K.C.M.G.) will act as Deputy of the'Governor-General. • * * Mr. E. P. Hay, Mayor of Lower Hutt, who was accompanied by Mrs. Hay, opened the East Harbour Horticultural Society’s Rose Show on Saturday. Mr. Hay is at present indisposed and is confined to his home.

Feeling reference to the late Mr. Walter H. Smith was made at the annual meeting of the Hutt Valley Competitions Society, and members stood in silence as a tribute to his memory. The president said that Mr. Smith had done wonderful service for the Society.

The Rev. E. W. ‘Batts, formerly of Lower Hutt and now of Dunedin, was appointed president-elect by the recent Baptist Assembly in Dunedin.

Dowse, of Lower Hutt, has been chosen as one of the nine New Zealand University representatives who will compete at the in ter-’Varsity athletic championships in Sydney early next year. He will take,apart in the breast-stroke swimming competition. The New Zealanders will probably leave for Australia on January 3.

Mr. C. K. Kelsey, a member of the Taita Central School Committee, has resigned on account of bis departure from the Taita area. Mr. Kelsey was chairman of the building sub-committee and a member of the dental clinic sub-com-mittee.

Todd Duncan, the Negro singer who proved so popular on his last visit, is expected to tour New Zealand again next year.

Mr. W. K. Dallas will retire shortly after forty year?’ service in the Department of Agriculture. For the past 10 years he has been Director or the Horticulture Division. • * • Mr. B. T. Rangiwhetu, who lias resigned from the outside staff of the Lower Hutt City Council after 3 4 years’ service, was granted a gratuity equal to three months’ wages by the Council at its last meeting. The Mayor, City Engineer and Councillors paid tribute to Mr. Rangiwlietu’s faithful service.
