ORCHESTRA AND CHOIR
HUTT TECHNICAL COLLEGE The important part taken by music. in the activities of the Hutt Valley Memorial Technical College at Petone was illustrated again at the opening of ihe new assembly hall and gymnasium on Wednesday afternoon. Under the direction of Mr. J. McLay. who has achieved splendid results in developing a taste for the best in music amongst the pupils, thus opening up a new world to them, the orchestra played the' National Anthem and the selection '•Rosemary," the latter being well described on the programme as "a stately dance." The orchestra, comprising strings, brass, and woodwind instruments, was well balanced, and the performance by the young players gave much pleasure to the audience. Later the school choir gave a stirring performance of "Praise my Sonl the King of Heaven." the fourpart singing being very effective and harmonious. The College is to be congratulated upon developing the cultural as well as the technical side'of the children*:; education. Dr. C. E. Beeby. Director of Education, said that the College had gained a reputation for its splendid choral and instrumental work, and Mr. M. Moohan, M.P.. also paid tribute to the high standard attained.
