Lower Hutt’s Name

DESIRABILITY OK CHANGE. DISCUSSION BY CHAMBER “A controversy is raging in Pros: and elsewhere over the city’s name,” said the secretary, Mr. L. V. Phillips, at the last meeting of the executive of the Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce and Industry. ‘‘No one is more vitally affected in this matter than the Chamber, in view of members’ connections overseas.” Mr. H. V. Horlor said the time was opportune for consideration oi a change of name. The city was named after a man who was connected with the New* Zealand Land Company, but had never been in New Zealand. Years ’ago, when the matter was discussed, the Internal Affairs Department refused to allow the city to be called ‘'Hutt City.” it was definitely time that a change should be made, and the Chamber should give consideration :o the provision of a fitting, dignified name of which they could be proud. “Ketone” Suggested. “I think that Hutt is an undignified name. Personally I would prefer Petone, with an amalgamation of the two towns,” said Mr. Horlor. Mr. R. Lawton said the Junior Chamber of Commerce was very interested in the matter. It suggested the setting up of a sub-corn mittee to consider the historical con: moncement, dignity, and future signihcanc'? of the name of the city. Mr. A. Brockelsby though: that, a Maori name would be most, fitting if it could be pronounced easily. It was decided that the matter bo discussed at the next me .ting of the executive, when all members are asked to bring forward suggestions.
