DEVELOPMENT OF VALLEY.
(To the Editor.) Sir,.—i se e the Government proposes to make airstrips on Gear Island. On May , r »th, 104 G, I made a proposal to the Government that it make Gear Island an airport for laud and seaplanes, also that to give some definite grounds to work upon for town planning it reclaim the whole .of the river-bed by. taking complete control of the river and using the water for domestic and hydro-electric purposes, excepting that portion between the harbour &nd the railway bridge, which I proposed be dredged to accommodate shipping. 1 was early given to understand that the locality is not suitable for a major airport, but I hope, whatever agreement is come to, that it will in no way be detrimental to the other part of the scheme should it be considered advisable at some future date to go on with it.—l am, etc. JOSEPH ASTALL. Lower Hutt, September sth.
