WOMEN WORKERS

COST IN MAINTENANCE. Writing to the editor of . the "Christian Science Monitor," a correspondent in New York says: "The article, 'Wliich Road, Women Workers?' written by Alma Lutz, in which equal pay to women for equal work is advocated, seems to be a fair and logical proposition on the tace, but is an unsatisfactory presentation of the problem in that it doe snot recognise the fact that women workers are far more costly to tlieir employers in maintenance. "These extra costs are represented in rest-room supplies, nurses, matrons, more elaborate feeding facilities, counsellors, extra costs incident to break-in, replacement, greater absenteeism, and greater turnover in the force. "There are other extras, such as a longer heating season in the plant. Insistence on equal pay will only work to the disadvantage of the female employees. I have seen it happen more than once. The employers cannot be expected to ignore the arithmetic involved."
