91st BIRTHDAY PARTY

MR. H. J. POOLE honoured. ; There was a full muster of the Old Comrades.' Association under the command of Major C. H. Gallagher, R.A., at Lyndhurst, Waterloo Road, last Saturday, when Mr. H. J. Poole celebrated his 91st birthday. Mr. Poole is one of the few surviving members of the Armed Constabulary Force, which lie joined in 1874. The constabulary was the first permanent military force formed in New Zealand, and included the police force. Mr. Poole first served at, Taupo, then an isolated military outpost. Later he was in Hie company that was landed on Opnnake Beach, consolidating the settlers' position there. Proceedings started witli a photograph being taken of all the guests iu the garden. The usual toasts were honoured, Colonel T. W. McDonald proposing that of the guest of honour,-who in his reply gave a graphic description of the capture of Te Whiti, who, in his own words, did not want to fight. A feature of the afternoon was the fact that when the birthday cake was presented to him by his daughter Mr. ' Poole blew out the 91 candles with one breath. The principal guests included representatives of the family* to the fputh generation, totalling upwards of SO. Mr. Poole is keenly Interested in horticulture.
