Supplies of Gas
ASSURANCE BY CHAIRMAN IMPROVEMENT EXPECTED Replying to criticism by Mr. H. V. Horlor of the position regarding gas supplies in the Hutt Valley, Mr. H. F. Muir, chairman of the Petone and Lower Hutt Gas Board, said: "Provided the coal supply is maintained in quantity and quality (a fac tor over which the board has no control) I do not think that the Board's statement that the position should be considerably improved within twelve months was unduly optimistic. There is no doubt that the position will gradually improve, and the consumers can be assured that the board is doing everything within iupower to cater for a rapidly-growin.s domestic and industrial demand." Mr. Muir added that Mr. Horlofs pessimistic views were quite unfounded. The first shipment of the new plant has arrived. The contractor's time for re-conditioning the plant is four months, not ei?ht months as stated by Mr. Horior. While the eight old ovens are being re-conditioned there will be ninenew ovens, which will produce at least 50,000 feet more of gas.
