A FEW TEARS
"Laugh and the World laughs with you; Weep and you weep alone." The wounded creature hides away As though all creatures only lived to slay; Yet how deny it's every creature's right to cry? Must we, then, be alone, alone to grieve ? Nor wear our weary heart upon our sleeve; And all our days sing only songs of fulsome praise. Has "the milk of human kindness" then Gone sour among the cruel tribes of men 'I Do we not know, that tears of pity ever flow? How shall we reach the suffering heart That hides its bleeding wounds away apart? And suffer, too, because "there's nothing w.e can do." POWINA GREY, Lower Hutt, 1946
