ICE CREAM AT THEATRES
REQUEST TO CITY COUNCIL The New Zealand Ice Cream Manufacturers' Association wrote to the Lower Hutt City Council, at its last meeting, advising of the intention of the Petone Borough Council to submit a remit to the forthcoming Municipal Associations' Conference, for the adoption of a standard by-law to nationally prohibit the consumption of ice cream in theatres. The Association asked for the Council's favourable support respecting a direction to council's delegate to oppose the adoption of what is considered an iniquitous standard by-law, which, if carried, would not only inflict a grave injustice upon the Dominion's ice cream industry, but also prove a somewhat preposterous infringement of the rights and liberties of all municipal electors, and incidentally,, possibly create very wide repercussions. Cr. Hay said he had very strong views on the matter. If the proposed by-law was adopted it would mean an infringement of the rights (bf the public. Cr. Lonsdale said he had approached theatre managers, and they had no objection to the sale of ice cream in their theatres.
It was decided that the Council's delegato be instructed to vote against the proposal.
