OBITUARY

MR. A. S. KEMPTHORNE

The death occurred in Auckland last week of Mr. A. S. Kempthorne, 0.8. E., of Lower Hutt, at the age of 62 years. Mr. Kempthorne, who was a son of the late Archdeacon Kempthorne, of Nelson, and a brother of the Bishop of Polynesia and the Rev. F. M. Kempthorne, vicar of Karori, Had lived at Lower Hutt since his retirement from the Eastern- Extension Cable' Company 1 in 1931. A large gathering of friends and representatives of Church and social organisations attended the funeral service at St. James's Church on Saturday morning before proceeding to the Taita Churchyard, where the burial took place. The service was conducted by the Bishop, Rt. Rev. H. St. Barb Holland, and Canon H. E. K. Fry, with the Rev. Michael Underwood, Rev. W. E: Hurst, and Archdeacon Kimberley in attendance In paying a brief tribute to the memory of Mr. Kempthorne, Canon Fry spoke of his persistent courage and long years of service in -the interests of the Church as lay reader, synodsman, vestryman, secretar of the Boys' Home, Toe H and Church of England Men's Society leader. During the war he had rendered outstanding service as secretary of the Military Affairs Committee, for which he had been honoured by the King.

The pall-bears were Messrs H. E. Lines (vestry), A. Reid (Toe H), Captain Pearce (Military Affairs), Geoff Kempthorne (brother), Paul Kempthorne (nephew), and —. Kimberley (Boys' Home). MR. J. R. CAREY The death occurred recently of a well-known Hutt Valley resident, Mr. J. R. Carey, chairman of directors of Carey's Cash Drapery Stores, Ltd. Mr. Carey was oh'"holiday in Masterton when he became, seriously ill and passed away within, five Mr. Carey was born at" Barnstapie, Devon, England, :n 1867. He was the son of Jonathan Pearce Carey, a Baptpist minister, and great-grand-son of Dr. William Carey, one of the founders of modern ,missions.Arriving in .New Zealand,,.in ; 189.0, he worked with several . drapery •firms in Christchurch before commencing business on his own account in Belfast. In. 19.02 he moved to Wellington and in 1910 to Petone, where he purchased the business of Messrs Webley and Co. Ltd., now known as Stettin's Buildings. In 1915 he moved to. the present.,business premises opposite'*"' the Post Office.

For over 35. years Mr. Carey, was a keen advocate for the progress of the Hutt Valley, and was associated with many of the developments of the past 25 years. Keenly interested in Christian things, he was secretary of the Petone Baptist Church for many years. He served the Baptist denomination as an executive officer for many years, being particularly interested in the Church Extension Committee of which he war a foundation member j Mr. Carey was also foundation member of .the Hutt Valley Y.M.C.A., serving as a director.

Mr. Carey was pre-deceased by Mrs. Carey just eighteen months previously. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. A. E. Edridge of Lower Hutt, and Miss Agnes Carey, of Lowry Bay, and two sons, Messi-s E. S. Carey, and Will Carey, ,of Lower Hutt. MR. HENRY MILLER Formerly headmaster of the Hutt Central School, Mr. Henry Miller died t at Day's Bay last week after a long illness. He was 64 years of ago. Mr. Miller arrived in New Zealand iu 1906 and after filling a number of important teaching positions, came to Lower Hutt where he did excellent work for 18 years, until ill-health compelled his retirement. He initiated the inter-provincial primary schools sports competitions. Mr. Miller held oCrce in the Eastbourne Masonic Lodge for 12 years. 11<; is survived by his wife and one son, Mr. J. W. Miller, Wellington.
