Hutt Bus Stops

OBJECTION TO LOCATION

VIEWS OF HUTT JAYCEES Regarding the location of the new bus stops in Lower Hutt, Mr. Hugh J. Eaton, president of the Hutt Valley Junior Chamiber of Commerce tui'd Industry in a statement last week, said: "There has been a suggestion that the Hutt Valley Junior Chamber of Commerce and Industry is in favour of the new bus terminus site. This is not correct. We definitely disagree with the present scheme at this stage. While the present arrangement may fit in with the Hutt City Council's town planning scheme for the future it might be anything up to five or even ten years before that development has fully taken place. We feel strongly that the public is being inconvenienced to no small degree by having to walk, bag and baggage, wet or windy, right around behind the Post Office when there is a site in Andrews Avenue closer at hand that would accommodate the present requirements.

"While in agreement with the Council on the High Street problem, owing to the heavier traffic and the need to clear the congestion it was necessary to find another bus terminus, but why go at this stage to the back of the Hutt Post Office?

Support of Buying Public,

"Service is the keynote of transportation. If we are to enlist the support of the buying' public in Hutt City we must give them the maximum of service. I have heard it said that it is better at present to go in the bus to Petone, alight, do the shopping, and re-enter the bus under cover, than try to cope with the new bus centre at the Hutt. The Jaycees have a very personal interest in the problem because, apart from being representative of a full cross-section of the community, our age group represents the family man and we know the trials and tribulations these days of the wife .with her shopping loads and small children. . Anything that can be done to lighten her task should receive first consideration, therefore we suggest the use of Andrews Avenue."

President's Statement Confirmed At a meeting of the board of the Hutt Valley Junior Chamber of Com merce on Monday night Mr. Eaton's statement was confirmed. It was considered by members that the present bus terminus was unsatisfactory, and that what was wanted was a bus terminal, with a depot- for etc. It was mentioned that there was a prospect of petitions against the present site being presented. The board decided to set up a subcommittee to investigate the matter and make recommendations.
