CARNIVAL AND CRICKET

—— USE OF RECREATION GROUNDS. When an application for the use of the Recreation Ground for a carnival was received by the Lower Hutt City Council at its last meeting, Cr. F. S. Hewer, chairman of the reserves and parks committee, said the granting of the request would interfere with cricket fixtures. His committee was finding great difficulty in meeting the demand from cricket clubs for pitches. Cr. E. F. Rothwell thought the cricketers were good sports and would not mind closing down for a couple of Saturdays to allow the carnival, the proceeds of which would go to very worthy causes, to be held. *< Cr. H. F. Muir considered that the cricketers should have * first claim, while Cr. W. Gregory said that thousands of people would get enjoyment from a carnival and many worthy causes would benefit. Cr. H. V. Horlor thought that perhaps the problem could be solved by using some bulldozers to level vacant land alongside the riverbank and hold the carnival there, but it was pointed out that if the weather was wet the proposed site would become a quagmire; The application for the use of the Recreation Ground for a carnival from January 19 to February 2 was granted, the suggestion being made that the pitches should jbje roped off, and the carnival start at 6.30 p.m on January 19, so that the cricket matches would not be interfered with.
