SHOPS AND SCHOOLS

SERIOUS SHORTAGE ALLEGED I " BUSINESSMEN ' CONCEiINED The serious shortage of both shops and schools in the new housing area was the subject of much criticism at last weeks meeting of the Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce. It was stated that many children were being transported long distances into Central Hutt to attend School and owing to lack of adequate transport being provided tney were in some cases required to pay their own fares. In dealing with the shortage of shops Mr. H. V. Horlor said there 'was a very urgent need for more shops in areas such as Taita and Waddington. Food, shops particular ly were badly needed, even those that were in being couldn't get enough goods to sell. Many returned men had had applications in for shops in these areas but premises were just not available. Mr. E. S. Carey: "The whole difficulty is control, the Government owns' all the land and controls all building operations. If the matter had been left to unrestricted private traders the shops would have been there long ago. A feeder service to the Hutt was one possible solution.' j Mr. N. T. Gillespie: "A feeder service is no solution. It was ridiculous to suggest that a housewife should have to travel by bus in order to buy sixpence worth ot' sausages Housewives must have food shops within a few minuies of the home. Apparently the Government were frightened to erect anything but. houses today but that was all wrong. Shops, houses, schools and churchet. should all have been built together and food shops in these areas should be given immediate priority." It was finally resolved to urge the Housing Department to immediately provide shops for the sale of foodstuffs in the WadciuigiOii and i\ac Nae areas.
