Rugby Notes

j Senior: Hutt lost, to Wellington College Old Boys Junior: Hutt defeated Woburn 12-0. This match drew as many, if not more, spectators than the senior match. Hutt won because of superiority in the forwards; they too were good for, the opposing pack. Woburn appeared to have the better backs but in spite of many opportunities could not pierce Hutt's defence which was particularly sound. It was surprising to note Woburn's inside backs giving away- possession by kicking. On paper they had a better three-quarter line than Hutt but this was not borne out by results, as O'Sullivan, Terres and Poole gave as much as they got. Mooney and Potter at five-eighth for Hutt were not overshadowed by their experienced opposites Hare and Jaeger. Actually the Hutt backs worked much better than usual. Walters was very safe at full back. In the forwards Lewton and Barnes were prominent in the loose play, the former particularly so. Fawcett, Parfler, McEldowney, Walinsley, Rattray and Phillips work ed splendidly in the tight. Fourth Grade: Woburn defeated Hutt 1-9. This was quite a good match with the winners winning thrugh superior back play. Sim at full back played an outstanding game for Hutt his iielding, kicking and tackling being of a high order. The best of the other backs was Manion, with West showing up on defence. In the forwards Simpson and Dawson caught the eye most, but all worked hard. Sixth Grade: Hutt defeated Poneke 11-0. This team was given the hcnour of playing the curtain raiser on No. 1 Ground and thoroughly earned it by turning on a bright display of football. Of all the lower grade teams in the club this team has played the best all round football—forwards and backs working well together. If these lads can be got together next year we predict a successful season for them. Primary Schools Saturday Morning - Competition. All boys who have been playing are requested to roll up to the gymnasium on Saturday without fail as senior and junior teams are to be selected to play against Wellington on Athletic Park the following Saturday, September Bth curtain raisers to the North versus South Services match. Travelling expenses will be paid.

Old Timers' Day This Saturday The programme has been fixed for the above and., includes line, place and drop kicking, and sprints for forwards and backs. After these events have been disposed of a Married versus Single match between present day players will precede a match between two fifteens of Old Timers. Ex players from Auckland, Taranaki, Hastings and other parts have signified their intention of being present and taking part in the events. Herb and Roy Hinton, two popular past .placers will be amongst them. No doubt quite a number of ex-players have not received invitations due in most cases to incomplete records and change of addresses. All are invited to attend this weekend and to report to the secretary of the Old Timers' Association, Mr. Ron Wickham, who will issue a special identification tag which must be worn by all Old Timers. WOBURN RUGBY NOTES The Juniors met Hutt in their final match this season and were beaten 12-0. The Hutt forwards played a great game and dominated the forward play in every sector. However, Woburn forwards fought for possession of the ball in scrums

but Devine was receiving no cooperation from his locks and was only able to heel the ball cleanly to his backs six or seven times during the game. The backs showed that they had plenty of penetration when they received the ball and were unlucky not to score on at least one of these occasions. In the forwards Devine and Du Faur played good fotball but unfortunately their combination was broken during the first spell, Du Faur having to leave the field with a broken nose. The Thirds were beaten by Eastbourne 8-0. This team did not play up to its high standard of their previous games and this was their first defeat in the second round of their grade championship. The Fourths defeated Hutt in the early game by 11 points to 9. At half back White played his best game this season and scored a try, kicked a penalty goal, and converted a try scored by Grindle. All players are reminded of the field day to be held at the High School next Saturday, commencing at 1.45 p.m. There are three fine shields to be competed for and a full attendance is requested.
