VALEDICTORY FUNCTION HUTT WOMEN ADDRESSED Members of the Hutt Valley Wojnen's Branch of the Labour Party pptot a most enjoyable afternoon recently in the R.S.a.. Rooms when the 4 - guest speaker was Sir Harry Batterby, High Commissioner from the United Kingdom. Sir Harry was accompanied by Lady Batterby. Mrs jWalter Nash was also present. On the arrival of Sir Harry and i Lady Batterby, wee Shirley Cooper i presented a beautiful bouquet of red and white roses to Lady Batterby, and "a spray of pink carnations to Mrk. Nash. Mrs. M. Dowse presided and explained that the afternoon was to be ■wholly English. The artistes, Mrs. Buchanan and Mrs Harvey, soloists, sang English songs, and Mrs, Craig Mackenzie recited Masefield's' poem, "'The West Wind." Mrs Steven was ;the accompaniste. Mrs. Dowse in welcoming Sir Harry and Lady Batterby, stated that Sir Harry had been the first High *' f Commission to be sent to New Zea- _ land from the United Kingdom and she felt that she expressed the general opinion in saying that both Sii ! Harry and Lady Batterby had adopt- ! Ed themselves so naturally and easily to the people and country of their | adoption; in short, they had become j one of us. Although they were ' shortly to leave these shores she knew that there would be times when '' ' they would think longingly of their Wellington home and wish to be tack here again "despite the wind I the earthquakes." . K Sir Harry said they would indeed leaving New Zealand. Both Lady : Batterby and himself had been yery happy here and they would take back, happy memories.
