RATIONING IN U.S.A.

N.Z. GIRL"S LETTER

Writing to her parents in New Zealand, regarding the food situation in America, a Hutt girl now resident in Los Angeles, says: —

"One subject I don't think I have told you much about ,and that is food. Don't let me hear you peoplej doing any griping about rationing i when I see you again. You are ra-j tioned but at least you know that you will get your ration. This point system is 'dopey.' You might have the points but unable to obtain the commodity. Each person gets 50 red points in five weeks. Now re-j member that red points cover butter, cheese, meat, cooking fats* oils and canned meats. To give you an idea of how far they go—and that is only when you can find the stuff in the markets —a pound of butter takes 24 points. To-night mater gave us a treat and bought four veal chops, 19 points, and cost 95 cents (5/6). Last week-end she bought rib roast, it had three ribs in it, and it cost 57 points and 2.75 dol. (16/3), That will give you some indication of the headache it is being a housewife here when you take into consideration that mince meat, beef livers and sausage meat take red points, although at lower rates. I eat margarine and think nothing of it. You see that takes 12 points as against 24 for butter."
