THE FIRE STATION

Sir, —As a Hutt resident I am interested in the intention of the Fire Board to erect their main station on a residential site in Waterloo Road, Lower Hutt. • It may be feared by some residents of Waterloo Road that the presence of the main station in their mids will depreciate their properties. It is only human of them to be so concerned. But, of course, the only thing that really matters is the position of the main station in relation to the general plan of the whole Valley. That, I think, must be clear to any fair-minded citizen. We feel, however, that the Fire Board should assure us that they have consulted the Town Planning authorities concerned with the planning of the Hutt Valley, and that the proposed lay-out of main and subsidiary stations has been decided with their approval. If this has not been done then the citizens of the Hutt should do their utmost to influence the Board in that direction. The proper placing of the Fire Stations is a matter which affects every one of us whether in home, factory, office or shop. It is by ; no means the sole business of the residents of any particular area. It is a Town Planning matter first and last. —I am etc., LOWER HUTT RESIDENT.

Sir, —The enclosed is a copy of a letter sent to the Minister of Railways and our committee would esteem it a favour if you would print a copy in your very valuable paper: TO THE MINISTER OF RAILWAYS Dear Sir, —As secretary of the above Guild I have been instructed to write to you on a matter causing concern in the Hutt Valley, to mothers with young children. Many of these have to* use the buses to get to the shopping centre,, and And it almost impossible to get out in the afternoon before 2 o'clock. The time allowed for prams on bus&s up to 4 p.m is too short to transact certain) i business at say the Post Office or visit a doctor in conjuncton with ordinary shopping. " The committee :ofo.'tbe,TWorawn'B'r .jOitttfenr.G-uild i are therefore requesting , that the time be extended to 4.30 pirn for the carrying of pram. Thanking you, EDTTH DENNEY, Hon. Secretary.
