WOBURN BOWLING CLUB

The following report was presented :il the sixteenth annual meeting of the Woburn Bowling Club held last Monday evening: — Membership: The membership for the year was: Active, 72; Honorary, Jl\ More active members could be accommodated. Obituary: It is with very real regret that we record the death of Mr H. L. August, a foundation member and a staunch supporter of Club, who endeared himself to all his fellow members by his happy, genial disposition. Our deepest sympathy is extended to all relatives. (ireciis: We again tender our thanks to Mr. R. Dickson for cutting and rolling out greens, and looking after our mowers, etc, as we were again without the services of a green keeper. The greens played well and finished up in good shape. We also thank all members who helped on the greens and grounds during the year. Refreshments: Special thanks are due to Mrs. Coatman for her excellent afternoon tea arrangements carried on under great difficulties, and to her and Mesdames Sutcliffe and Monks for their good work _n catering for several tournaments. Great appreciation was freely expressed by members and visitors. lilies' Social Committee: The Card Afternoons run by this committee were very enjoyable and we thank the ladies for a donation £7/10/- handed us by them. Club Competitions: These provided many keen and enjoyable con-, tests, and resulted as follows: — Championship Senior Singles: J. L. Deas. Championship Senior Pair: R. M. Glennie and A. H. Overend (skip). Championship Senior Fours: R. M. Glennie, W. Havler, A. H. Parsons, A. H. Overend (skip). Championship Junior Single: R. M. Glennie. First Year Singles: J. McDonald. Handicap Singles: N. Berry. Club Fours: R. Peck, A. G. Stewart, R. C. Adams, A. H. Parsons (s). Thanks: The committee wish to thank the Match Committee, the -electors, and all Members who in any way helped the club during the year, and wou'd point out that the club owes a lot 'to working bees in tli« present difficult times. Thanks are also extended to Mr. Leydon for auditing the books. The Club took part in the Hutt Valley Banner and Friendly Competitions and enjoyed many good games. Performances: Club members' should be pleased at the success of „>ur Junior Singles Champion, Mr. 11. M. Glennie in winning the Junior Singles Championship of the Wellington Centre against representatives of all ottier clubs, and the . committee extends to him their hearty congratulations. Several teams from the Club played in the Marlborough Easter Tourney and one team —Messrs Glennie, Havler, J. August, and Parsons (s) — w r on 11 games without a loss, but were unfortunately beaten in the final. They deserve great credit for this fine performance. In the Wellington Centre Pennant Competitions (Saturdays) the Club put up a very good showing, winning 15 games out of .1.(5 in Section Play and tying in the Semi-final in games won, but losing on points scored. N The season closed on 25th April. In the Croquet Section the report stated that many of the members were still engaged in war work. Two active members joined for the latter half of the season and are making good progress. Card afternoons held during the winter were a social and financial success.The ladies contributed 10/- month ly to Mrs. J. W. Andrews for soldiers' parcels, and £5/17/- was sent to the Y.W.C.A. for soldiers' teas and parcels, in addition to parcels sent to members' sons on active service. A special card afternoon was held in aid of the patriotic fund everything being given by members, and resulted in the handsome sum of £f)/.''>/- being sent to the mayoress. The Wellington Tournament was again cancelled, but Tnter-club games were played against Hutt and Petonc Clubs and much enjoyed. An Umpires' Meeting was "held on the lawn and all Hutt and Petone clubs were represented, when Mrs. Bryan, the official umpire, gave a lecture and demonstration of various shots, which were most interesting. J Special thanks are due to Mrs. Coatman for the ladies' tea arrangements during the season, and to the honorary members for giving us a card afternoon which brought to the funds £.1/1/-. We wish to thank members and friends for donations and trophies, and everyone who helped to make the season a success; and lastly to Messrs Dickson and Roberts for the care of the lawns. The Club events resulted as follows:— "A" Champion: Mrs Brittaine: runner-up, Mrs Popple. Intermediate Champion: Mrs. Triokett; runner up, Mrs. Coatman. "13" Champion: Mrs Cambourn: runner-up, Mrs. Hoy. Handicap Singles: Mrs. Jameson; runner-up, Mrs. Popple. Handicap Doubles; Mesdames August and Cambourn; runners-up: . Messrs Popple and Robertson.
