Flower Show

In accordance with the usual custom of the school to hold a flower show on the shortest day of the year the pupils of the Hutt Valley High School put up an excellent display of flowers and vegetables last Wednesday. The show was opened by Mrs. C. E. Beeby, wife of the Director of Education, who congratulated the • scholars on "their enterprise in collecting such a fine display of flower# on the shortest day of the year. She described gardening as a creative art and considered it should play a part in the life of every school. The popularity of this show appears to increase yearly, both in the number of entries and the keen competition which it fosters between the various sections of the school. Afeature of the show was the four massed displays put up for ■* tion between the various schoolv : houses. The judge, Mr. A. W. Freeman, had great difficulty in a selection, but finally awarded it to School. This stand was beautifully arranged and contained over 200 varieties of flowers and plants. Kidson came second in this competition. The decorative classes produced some excellent work as also did the very dainty specimens of sand tray gardens and posies. There were a large number of entries in the spray and button-hole classes, but the judge advised the exhibitors that there was a tendency to make the latter a little too large. Several excellent exhibits of vegetables provided by the boys was a* pleasing addition to the show.
