GRAFTON Y.M.C.A. DRAW WITH HUTT
A tie on the first innings was the unusual feature in the special cricket match played at the Basin Reserve on Friday and Saturday between Grafton Y.M.C.A., the Auckland champions, and Hutt, the probable Wellington champions, each side scoring 129 runs. In their second innings, the visitors made 168 for four wickets and declared, leaving Hutt with two hours in which" to endeavour to force a win. Scoring was not eatey, however, against a steady attack, though more enterprise would have been justified by Hutt and may have led to a win. At stumps Hutt had lost seven wickets for 148 runs, the game ending in a draw.
A large crowd saw the fixture. C. Burke, an Auckland representative, was mainly responsible for Hutt failing to secure a first innings lead after the opening batsman (Muir) (65) and Mustard (17) had given the side a good start. He took five wickets for 35 runs ofi ! 18 overs. The visitors ran up 168 runs in their second innings in two hours and a quarter, a sparkling innings by the captain, G. Wallace, for 44 not out, being a valuable contribution.
C. Muir, the outstanding performer for Hutt, top-scored in the second innings, in which more enterprise may have led to outright win. Burke's spinners again had the batsmen watching him carefully. His figures for the match were impressive—33 overs, 5 maidens, 69 runs, 8 wickets. Details: —
