HIGH SCHOOL CONCERT

That the child's education may extend beyond the bounds of the classroom and text book was well illustrated by the pupils of the Hutt Valley High School last week, when they held the annual school concert in the school Assembly Hall, Vocal, orchestral and band music, with a very admirable exhibition of the dramatic art, provided a programme that delighted the large audience and demonstrated the opportunities offered to the school child of to-day who can appreciate the cultural arts as an adjunct to scholastic education. An excellent orchestra, under the direction of Mr. 1. Ilills, played a number of selections 111 a most creditable manner, including air from "The Water Music" (Handel), sextet from "Lucia di Lammermore" (Donizetti), "Chanson sans Paroles" (Tchaikowski >, and "Minuet" (Boccherini;. Violin numbers by Desmond Clarke marked this young musician as one of considerable promise. He was also heard to advantage in a trio of two violins, the accompaniment being supplied, b.v fsobel Macky, an excellent young pianist. The -only solo singer was Phyllis Williams, who was recalled tor her sweet rendering of ''Spring is a Lovely Lady" (Montague Phillips). Ivan Lawson, who is well known in the Hutt Valley for his versatile stage craft, gave a clear interpretation of a Spanish dance in costume. The girls' choir, under the baton of Miss M. Campbell, was heard in several enchanting numbers, the iirst bracket being unaccompanied and the second accompanied by Mary Williams. The first half of the programme was concluded with a bracket of two Humbert by the combined choirs, accompanied by the orchestra. Their number: were "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring (J. S.
