Correspondence

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —There is cause for grave concern at the wash-out caused by the last flood Just below Melling Bridge. This has eaten out thfe bank for about 10 feet behind the railway Iron lattice and, next flood has only a few ftjet to wash, away the stop-bank, and then lbrd help' the business part of Hutt City.! This part of the river needs heavy blocks of stone like the railway line and good filling behind it.

There is a gang of men at present putting willow sticks and stones there. These, in my opinion, are, in that position, not worth anything, as the next flood will wash them away and do a lot of damage. Trusting the Hutt' River Board will tackle this problem properly.— I am, etc., CONCERNED. [The engineer reported on this section of the river at last week's meeting of the board, and his remarks will be found on page 5.— Ed.]
