LEAGUE OF MOTHERS

, LOWfiB HUTT BRANCH Continued and Increasing interest in the Lower Hutt branch of the League of Mothers was evidenced at the July meeting recently, when 16 new members were received. The president, Mrsj J. W. Andrews, presided over very large gathering, and announced that in connection with the next meeting,, the annual business meeting, nominations for new committee members would be received by the secretary, Mrs. J. D. King, up to Friday, Ist August.

Mrs. W. O. Gibb's - helpful "thought" from R. L. Stevenson, was When we look into the long avenue of the future and see the good there is for each one of us to do, we reallße after all what a beautiful thing it is for us to work, and to live, and be happy." ,

Entertainment was supplied by Mrs. Wilsoh, vocal numbers, arid by the choir, conducted by Mrs. H, S. Barron, In "O Where, Tell Me Where?" "Snow," aiid the "Chidle Song." "Speech Training, its Eftects and Defects/' was the; subject xhoaen by Mts. A. Crookendert, who quoted Kajthleen Rich's definition of elocution—the art of perfect speech. "The art of perfect speech depends Upon scientific knowledge," and to attempt to become a finished elocutionist without knowledge was to* endeavour to make apple pie without the apple, said Mrs. Crookenden.

The correct breathing which is attained from elocution, lessons is of inestimable value to one's physical health, as it prevents or eliminates throat and chest disorders. The use of the age-old art of mime or "thought ' In action," developed through the ageß (and always done to music) is of great use for the treatment of stammering and stuttering, which nervous disabilities can be cured with the co-operation of parents.

To conclude, Mrs. Crookenden again . quoted from Kathleen Rich, "Why I Learn Eloocd'tjon." "I learn elocution because I gain self-; confldence and poise in speaking, not only in public and on the stage, but also in social intercourse. I learn because I realise' that 1 the Study of voice-production, entailing a knowledge of the correct method of breathing, Is undoubtedly of benefit to my health, especially, the nervous system, and respiratory organs. And I learn because it is a joy to give pleasure to others."

Mrs. A. E. Milne voiced the mem-' bers' appreciation of Mrs. Croolcenden's interesting and Instructive talk.

Afternoon tea was served by Mrs, B. Peglar and helpers.
