Miss Best commenced her highly successful career on the stage at Southampton and from there graduated to the London theatre. "South Riding," Miss Best's latest starring vehicle, is the screen version of Winifred Holtby's bestselling novel. The story deals with the corrupt council of a small Yorkshire town and the efforts of the local squire and schoolmistress in trying to unravel this tangle of local politics. Ralph Richardson, Ann Todd, and Edmund Gwen fill the remaining starring roles in "South Riu ing," which was produced by Alexander Korda and Victor Saville. "UNION PACIFIC" A star-packed cast topped by Barbara Stanwyck and Joel McCrea, the heroic story of the building of America's first transcontinental railroad and some of the biggest epic scenes Cecil B. De Mille has ever filmed combine to make C.B.'s newest offering, "Union Pacific," one of the most impressive works of many a season. Paramount will give it its first local showing at the King George Theatre on Friday.
