FIRE BRIGADE

The report on the activities of the Fire Brigade for the month of October, reported at the Borough Council meeting on Monday evening, stated that six calls were attended. Two were property fires, two gorse fires, and two false alarms, one of which was malicious. Two drills were carried out, the time occupied being 2 hours 16 minutes. Both fire engines have been serviced regularly and are in good working order, while the street fire alarms and private fire alarms have been tested regularly and are in satisfactory condition. The change over to instantaneous couplings on the hoses, etc., has been completed except for some minor fittings. The delivery of these has been held up, due to the Government having taken precedence over delivery of /all fire equipment from manufacturers.

HIS FANCY Gladys was very fond o£ flowers, and had persuaded her young man to accompany her to the local flower show. "By the way," she said, when they were on their way and she had given a recital of the various flowers she liked, "what is your favourite flower, Arthur?" Arthur was nonplussed for a moment, for his knowledge of botany was one of his weak points. "Oh," he replied at length, as light dawned upon him, "the flour they bake bread with, my dear." The vicar had a truculent woman parishioner, noted for her fondness for gin. One day she went to church, hiccoughing with a painful distinctness. The parson bore it for a few moments, then, looking a* the verger, he exclaimed: "Jones, kindy remove that person from the building." Jones rose reluctantly to obey. The congregation held its breath, expecting a scene, but 'to their relief the woman rose apd left without a murmur. After the service the vicar congratulated the man on the tactful way he had removed the culprit. . "How did you manage it?" he asked. "Well, sir," said the verger, "I just went to her and whispered, 'Come on, ma; come out and have one wi' me.'"
