EASTBOURNE CRICKET CLUB'S OPPOSITION

The system of deciding matches on the average of -runs scored per wicket, which was introducedjjy the Hutt Valley Cricket Association toward the end of last season, was condemned by members of the Eastbourne Cricket Club, last year's senior championship winners, at* the annual meeting last week. It was unanimously decided to instruct delegates to the association's annual meeting to oppose the reintroduction of the svstem this season.

Members contended that the system would foster a selfish type of game and encourage captains to put in only their first batsmen, leaving the tail-cnders with no chance of a turn at the crease. It also placed the winning of the chanipfonship before the spirit of the game and interfered with too many of the usual rules. The annual report stated that tuc A team won the Hutt Valley Cricket Association's A grade championship and the Wilford-Kerr Shield in its second season, of Hutt Valley competition. The D team was second in its grade in the special competition decided on the average tuns per wicket, by .042, an equivalent of three runs. The A grade team was beaten only twice in the 13 .games played in the championship series. E. Foley would be back with the club this season, and a welcome addition was E. Collins, a former senior Punedin club player.

The following trophies were won dur-ing-the season: Best batting average (Mr, .Spence's bat), E. Roberts; most .improved player (Mr. W. H. Barton's bat), M. C. Hill; best fieldsman in the A team, : L. N. Foley; best iieldsnian in the D team, B. Girdlestone.

Finances proved satisfactory. Staiting with a cash balance from the previous season of £12, cish in hand at the close of the financial year stood at £20, and this despite the large amount (£24) spent on the purchase of new gear. Only two subscriptions were outstanding. Thanks were Jut' to Mr. F. Motrice for the excellent wickets prepared.
