TOWNSWOMEN'S GUILD

Oil Tuesday evening, July 19th, St, James Hall, was the scene of a bright and sociable party, celebrating the Ist birthday of the Townswomen's Guild. In spite of the wet evening the hall was well filled with members and their friends. The Singing Crrcle under the able leadership of Mrs. Tunley opened the evening by singing the "Birthday Song" and " Santa Lucia." Other items were givep. by Miss Marie Guise, and Mr. Bryce Glennie, anjl dances by Miss Rita Guise,, ~and Mr. Jack Glennie. Mr. K. Connor sang "Toreador" and "Waia'ta Maori," while Mrs. L. Gracger rendered "Too Late To-morrow." The Drama C.irclc under the leadership of Mrs. M. Dowse produced a play entitled "Women at War." This play was well chosen, and very cleverly depicted, an exciting period in English history. Those taking part were: Mesdames E. 0. Jones, W. Ross, B. Nicholson, L. H. '•Tyrcll, M. Dowse, E. Suters, and W. Futter. The costumes cleverly represented the dresses of that time and each performer carried out her part excellently. The Art Circle added greatly to the interest of the evening by exhibiting many specimens of very beautiful work. Great credit is due to Mrs. Young under whose tuition this work was produced. ■ . - A beautiful birthday cake was made by Mrs. Bcnstcad, and iced by Mrs Carey, and this was much admired. "An excellent supper was provided by the members of the guild, and was much appreciated by their guests. Mrs. Moran, President o fthe Guild, acted as hostess in her usual charming manner. Mrs. Moran expressed the regret of all the members that Mrs. Dowse, under pressure of public duties had found that she could no longer carry out the duties of convenor of the Drama Circle. Toward the end of the evening the choir sang two further numbers entitled "Sweet and Low" and "I Love You Truly." A very enjoyable evening was brought to a close by the singing of the "National Anthem" and "Auld Lang Syne."
