RHODES SCHOLARS.

The Professorial Board of .Victoria University College last week announced the selection of two students, W. L Combs, 8.A., and It. L. Meek, as the nominees 'of Victoria College for the 1938 Rhodes Scholarships. The nominees from each of the constituent colleges of the University of New Zealand meet in Wellington late in October each year and a selection is maide by a committee presided over by His Excellency the Governor-General, acting in his private capacity. The scholars elected this year will take up residence at Oxford in September, 1935. Mr. Meek, who is the son of Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Meek, of Bellevue Eoad, is 20 years of age, attended the Eastern Hutt Primary School and was dux in 1928, at the age of 11. At the Hutt Valley High School he passed the Matriculation examination in 1931, and Mas dux of the school with another in 1933. In 1934 he entered Victoria College, winning the Chief Justice's prize in 1935 for the best student in Property and Contract Law. He is sitting for the final examination in law in November. At the Hutt Valley High School he twice won the breaststroke championship, breaking the record. He lias taken a leading part in the Victoria College .Swimming Club and represented Victoria in 1935-30-37. He has been an enthusiastic tramper for the past three years. He won the Hugo Memorial Shield for public speaking for two years at his secondary school and was ■ichairman of the Dramatic, Debating and Hobbies Clubs there.
