WAIWHETU STREAM
COMPLAINT AT POLLUTION
Attention was drawn again to pollution of the Waiwhetu Stream 'by oil escaping .from the railway workshops by the caretaker of the Hutt Park, Mr L). iievan, in his repcrt to last week's nice ting of the Hutt Park Committee. There was not the slightest doubt as to the origin of the trouble, he said, 'because on any week day a continuous stream of water and oil might be seen (lowing from the -worksheps' drain into the Waiwhetu Stream, although it was said art oil trap was in use. The committee decided to send a strong protest to 'the Railway Department at the pollution of the stream. The caretaker reported also that the trees on the eastern bank of the Waiwhetu -Stream were well-established, so the goTse that formerly protected them 'would, 'be grubbed out to reduce fire risk A. number of seats had ibeen erected in the plantation to prevent motor-cars being driven on the grass in the picnic grounds. The golf course had proved very popular. The action of the committee's officers in putting six men to work on the park under the new employment scheme nhoreby the Government pays the men's wages up to £4, was approved.
