TWO IMPORTANT CONFERENCES.

MR W. NASH ATTENDING •

PACIFIC RELATIONS & BRITISH COMMONWEALTH RELATIONS.

On Tuesday of next week, Mr Walter Nash, M.P. will leave on the s.s. Maunganui, for Canada, .via San Francisco to attend the Pacific Relation? Conference at Banff on August 14-28, and the British Commonwealth. Relations Conference at Toronto on September 11th to 21st. During Mr Nash 's absence from ;th» Dominion the Hon. Mark Fagftn M.LJ3. and Mr P .Fraser M.P. will attend to the requirements of the Hutt electorate. Relations of Pacific Countries. The purpose of Mr Nask's visit to Canada is to represent New Zealand at two conferences. The first is that of the • Institute of Pacific Kelations which will be held at Banff from August 14th to 28th. The New Zealand delegation to this conference consists of the Hon. W. Dowme Stewart MVP., Mr H. P. Yon Haast,'AlL«s M. Seat on, and Mr Nash, who is the chairman of the executive. The purpose of the. conference, which is the fifth of the Institute, is to sttidy the conditions of the peoples and countries in the Pacific area, with a view to improving their mutual relations. _ The main subjects on the agenda at Banff are: To analyse^the tendencies toward an organised self-sufficiency in certain Pacific regions and their effect on commercial relations. The iltacussiou ou this question will involve consideration of economic elements such as —(1) Raw Materials (souce and sup P lvl- (2J'Markets. (3) External and Internal Trade. (4) Tariffs. (5) Communications. These again will give rise to the following questions:—(a) How have tariffs, migration policies, loan policies, commercial policies, hindered or developed the best use of the resources of the Pacific Area; (b) How have governments and private enterprises planned their external operations; (c) To what extent have these operations contributed to the best use of the. resources of the Pacific area; (d) To what extent do these plans' represent the aims and interests of the peoples they directly or indirectly affect*- ' The subjects will be followed by discussion on the best means for international adjustment, and the bringing into the machinery of negotiation and consultation. British Commonwealth Relations. The second conference at Toronto is of representatives from all the countries in the British Commonwealth* .The preliminary meetings will cummenco on September oth and the * full conference will open on September llth concluding on the 21st of the same month. The purpose of this conference is to consider the relations between the British Commonwealth countries and the existing system of communications, consultation and . action between the members of the Commonwealth. The subjects will include interchange of information, foreign policy, trade, defence, judicial system, Privy Council, etc. Mr Nash will also represent the Wellington Harbour Board at the Conference of Pacific Port Authorities in Toronto from September 4th to September 9th, and will attend, the meeting of the Pacific Council at Banff, from the 7th to the 18th of August.
