BENEFIT SOCIAL AFTERNOON.

There was a v,ery large attendance at St. Peter's Hall on Tuesday of laet week when a social afternoon in aid of the Mayor's Relief Fund was held. A cheery log fire and electric heaters coinfortaPb'ly twaa-mod the hall, which •Was artist'i'oally decorated with hydrangeas, autumn foliage and berries. At the .close of the afternoon, the mayoress (Mrs. J. W. Andrews) fwa>nmly .thanked everyone for asfeistiyug a ■cause whidh' wa<s in such urgent need of assistance,. the committe for jthir support), and Fatnr Daly far pelaicing ,the hall at thetir disposal. . The financial result of .'the afternoon including donations, reached the very .saJtisfa/ctdry sum of £26/18/-. i Miss Nancy Williams was the >hon. eecretaTy. Eencc Adoree, the French heroine of tho "Big Parade" recovered not long ago from a two years' illness and was offered contracts by every studio in Hollywood—a striking tribute to her personal popularity. Clara Bow, another rare exception, climbed back to favour with "Call Her Savage," Edna Purviance, Chaplin's former leading lady, retired some years ago. But the two great refuges of the fallen star, or the star who falls out with producers, are the stage and (in the case of women) marriage. Dorothy Dalton, Leatrice Joy, May McAvoy, Bessie Love, Lita Grey Chaplin, Mildred Harris Chaplin, Irene Castle, Betty Bronson, Phyllis Haver, Nita Naldi, Marguerite Clark, Constance Talmadge and Lillian Walker (the dimpled star of 20 years ago), all retired on marriage though both Mr Chaplin's former wives are now in vaudeville. Baby Peggy, that charming tot, is now about 15. As for "Our Gang," Mr McGowan, who directs them, tells me that he is continually finding that this or that player has outgrown his work, and has to be replaced. '' Too old at 12" —so runs the melancholy legend. The one player who can afford to smile at the inevitability of fate is Master Cooper. At the age of 9 he has still some years of usefulness ahead of him, and since he is paid £500 a week and spends half-a-crown, there is a fair chance that when the time does come for him to retire he will have amassed a competence equal to Master Coogan'fl £200,000.
