(By Stumps). HUTT v. umVRItSITY. Batting the previous Saturday, the local side scored 232. For the resumption of the match conditions were ideal, everything favouring the batsJaen. The most optiniistie supporters of Hutt, hardly expected the students to bo,dismissed for the small total of 125. Beard, prior to this match, hwd not been bowling with that "bit of devil" 'W&ich characterised his trundling two frissons ago. In this game he producthe form fox which ho was noted in past seasons. Rocking them down much faster than usual, Ms deliveries nipped off the pitch very quickly, this, plus a most disconcerting late swing ted most of the 'Varsity 'batsmen in trouble. Beard bowled 17 overs, securing seven wickets (all bowled) for 42 runs. He was ably assisted by McG-irr who took 2 for 23. Paetz was top scorer for the visitors with 43 runs, made by sound cricket. The next highest total was secured by Caldwell who made 25 in quick time. Being over 100 ibehind on. the first innings, the visitors batted again, faring nmeh better in ftkeir second attempt, scoring 114 for the loss of three wickets. JSTelsdn 50 (not out), Harrison 27, MeLeod 12 (not. out) all batted freely. Ross was the moet successful bowler in this innings, taking 1 foT 7 off 4 overs. Details are as follows:— HUTT. L.OWER GRADE EESULTS. Junior A.—After being in an apparently secure position the Junior A's lost •n the first innings to Old Boys. Hutt scored 232 on the first day to whicth! Old Boys replied with 5 for ' 85. On Tesuming Hutt secured anothef wicket cheaply, after which dropped catches told the tale with the result that the ex-Collegians ran up the respectable to- ] tal of 282. Loekett trundled well for Hutt, taking 6 for 69. The local side batted again, scoring 179 for 6 wiciets. Matthews played a forceful hand for 79 not out, Pegler 43. and Heap 16 also batted well. tJunior Bl. —Hutt lost to Maiist in a game which, was played out. Hutt Third B's drew with Bailways. Third C.—Duthies defeated Hutt on the first innings. Hutt 116; Moran 79, Haines 12. Duthies 183 (Raines 5 for "33). ; .' notes. The collapse, of 'Varsity in the first .innings rofcbed the senior game of ;a lot of. interest. T&e students were decidedly Tinlucky in striking Beard at the top of his form. The -ways of skippers are sometimes hard to understand. In Varsity's first innings Boss was brought on to bowl. His first over cost 7 runs and his second was a maiden, the batsman, Paetz, feeling for the leg stuff with the field set' to trap him. Much to everyone's surprise, Ross was taken off after the second over. In the second innings he was kept on for four over taking 1 for ,7- } ■-■■■■ ■ . ■ . Some of the Junior A's best batsmen are their worst fieldsmen. It is questionable whether it pays to keep a toan in the team who makes 30 or 40 runs oily to drop valuable eatehes in the field. I>ev. Matthews .has been very consistent with the bat this season. His .average against Old Boys was 120 (41 and 79 not out). Pegleris also consistent with the bat. His.fielding, however is a bit erratic. . The Colts' team, had hard luck in not securing an outright win. Faced with 96 runs to get, and an th.our to bat, their prosepects looked bright. tJn£qrtvtiaa.tely two of their most solid batsmen had to'•'get away early, consequently when some of the early wickets fell cheaply, there was a possibility of losing the game if the pace was forced too much/ Skipper Faber almost did the trick by knocking, up 40 in quick time. C Muir batted nicely for 19. Old Boys did not show the best of sportsmanship in this game, tak-, ing over twenty minutes interval between the innings, and when Hut| were batting, bowling wide of the wickets Tom Qwilliam signalled his reappearance by knocking up 109 for the Junior C's against Stop Out. In every junior game played on the Hutt Bee on Satvrday last, a century was scored. Stevens (Old Boys) 108, Binnie, (Old Boys) 133, Gwilliam (Hutt C) 109, and Holtz (Duthies Third A) 116. Moran of the Third C'e scored over two-thirds of his side's total against Duthies. '-
