N.Z. ALPINE AND BOCK GARDEN SOCIETY.

The rockeries of the N.Z. Alpine and IRock Garden Society have advanced in a "wonderful manner in the Short time that has elapsed since their foundation in 1928 and they now foran one of the most interesting and beautiful gardens in the Hutt Valley. The Society is doing a most valuable work, not only by beautifying the borough in a very practical manner tmt by its efforts to educate, not only its members, but the general public, on New Zealand Alpine flora. The efforts of the Society deserve the support of every nature lover. The -annual subscription entitles tne memher -to many advantages, not .the least of -which, is a very liberal free distrdbution of plants and seeds. NATIVE FLORA. COMPETIT!IiON. To encourage the young folk to study the beautiful native flora of Now ZeaJand. a Competition will be held during 1931 covering the period between January Ist 1931 and November 10th, 1931, fox the best collection of native leaves, powers and or berries. The specimens snotdd be pressed and aviinme'd or otherwise secured to stiff wnite 'paper or light cardboard, in. booik iorm preferably, correctly named, and well secured. The" competition is open to children (either sex) of members of the Society only, under 18 years of age. Competitive exhibits must reach the Director aiot later than the 10th day of November. Judging will be in the hands of a special committee, and the awards made and forwarded 'before Gnristmas. Entry fe« of sixpence to cover cost of returning exhibits will be charged. Entries close end of January. Conditions.—The work must be the work of the competitors alone. The Society undertakes to return all exhibits immediately after the awards are made. The Society reserves the right to exhibit any or all competitors' work at the Hutt Valley Horticultural Show in November. - Items of information' regarding the vaTioiiS. varieties, as, for instance, their use as food for birds, animals, etc., or any other utility purpose—in tne case of tree timbers, their various uses, etc, Such items of information ~aTe in no. way compulsory, but would be taken into consideration when, making the awards.
