ROSE SHOW.

The Hutt Valley Horticultural Society's Rose Show which' was held last week, i roved to be a huge success in apxtc c.£ the sdm ewirat backward and stormy season. Mr. Walter Nash, M.P., who was accompanied hy Mrs. Nash, officially open ©d the show and was introduced iby tho President of the Society (Mr. D. S. Patrick), who said that he was doulbly pleased to woleome tire member for the district on this occasion, as he was now a resident of the borough. He also particularly thanked those exhibitors who, at great trouble and expense to themselves, had put up such fine exhibition stands, particularly Messrs A. H. Burgess and Sons of Waikanae, Mr Vivian Biddiford and Mr. Eric Bidditford of Orongoronga. "Whilst wo have such members/ said the president, *'we are assured of success." Mr. Nash, expressed his pleasure at being present bo,th as member for the district and as a resident of Lower Hutt. There was nothing, he considered, that added more to the beauty and pleasure of life than the cultivation of flowers. Speaking of the early shistory of the rose, Mr. Nash said that there were over 12,000 different varieties of roses and if they could b© placed 3ft apart, they would extend from Lowe* Hutt to Wellington without any two j foeing the same. Voicing au idea that had been expressed by Mr. Patrick, Mr ! Hash advocated the formation of a ; beautifying society to develop the many beauty spots in t«ho district. Among the displays for exhibition only, was a new Australian rose "Golden Down," exhibited., by Mr. Helyar. Collection violas, Mrs A. J. Nich'olls, 'Mrs. H. Morrison exhibited a fine tray of choice pansies for which, he was awarded the: B.H.S. Certificate. Messrs ' Burgess and Son displayed a wonderful1 collection of Pominion Iris on a/12ft x 12ft tiered stand in>the centre of the floor. This exhibit created a great amount of interest and was probably the finest collection of Irises ever staged in this country. This exhibit was awarded the B.H.S. Silver Medal. j • Mr. Vivian Biddiford's superb col- I lection of Calceolarias was also awarded the B.H.S. Silver Medal, and was \;, tastefully arranged in one solid Circular mass tof exquisite colour on the floor of the hall. This and the previous exhibit were the outstanding features of this year's rose show. Mr. Eric Eiddif ord staged a most in-, teresting collection of aquilegias, which amply demonstrated the great strides made by the hybradist with this old fashioned flower. The B.H.S. Bronze Medal was awarded. Sir Alex. Boberts and Messrs Anstis and Son each displayed interesting collections of roses. The Scenic BeseTves Committee of the Lower Hutt Borough Council made' the usual fine display of flowers and ' foliage across the end of the hall, adding considerably po the decoration of the hall. , In the trade ..exhibits Messrs Pile-he* and Son were awarded the B.H.S. Silver Medal for a most artistic stand comprising a caTpet of maidenhair fern which sreved to throw up the effect of I the cactus, amariilis, roses, palms and

general collections of pot plants and ; foliage. Mi*. H. Pople had a fine stand of pot plants wnich included orchids, strepscarpus, f erhsj etc. Messrs Nottingham and Son, Ltd., displayed, an assortment of Jeyos'' Steralising Compounds which are claimed to haye exceptional properties in the destnvetion of insect pests.
