TO RELIEVE UNEMPLOYMENT.
.At the Borough Council meeting oa. Monday evening the Mayor reported that he had that day attended a conference called by Mr, W. JSask, M.P, to consider ways of dealing with- the unemployment position in the B&att Valley. There '-were also present at, the conference Mr. D. McKenzie (Mayor of Petone), Mr. H. V. Jones (Mayor ©fc Eastbourne), and Mr. D. B. Hoggaxdf (Chairman Hutt County Council); -The Mayor said that they discussed the question of tmemploymerit in the Valley and ways and means to overcoxae it. On. the suggestion :of Mr. Nash it was decided to form small com l'xaitt'ees> which-would meet once a fortnight and keep in touch with tie position in the various areas and report to the Central Committee i Tlrere is still'a considerable amount of unemployment in the Valley, said Sir Alex., and I am afraid that some of. it may last through the summer months. It will be some time before any benefit iwill be received from thai Unempioynrent Belief Fund and we must endeavour to do the best we can in the meantime. Cr. Campbell:." I think it is a good idea that such a committee should be set up so that when the scheme 'is brought into operation the committee ~ will be able to obtain early relief. The committees should be kept up to date and the engineers shouLd ~be keenly ' alive to the position in their respective boroughs. , The Mayor Explained that- the objetob of the confexeaee was to set up machinery """tofiaetion until the TTneon- # ployment Board waß established. .
