LOWER HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Togurlar meeting of the Lower, Hutt • Borough Council was held, on Monday evening. There were present the Mayor (Sir Alex. Roberts), and Crs. A. -Meßain, W. Mel&mm/ J>. S. Patrick, A. E. Carver, F. Campbell, A. Grierson, A. J. Hobbs and J. R. Boyd. An apology was received from Or. Mitchell. ■, FIRE PREVENTION COMMITTEE. Council agreed with the recommendation of the committee that proceedings be taken against a builder who had erected a building without having ap--plied for the "necessary permit. The application of Mr. Slbwey for permission to erect five shops on land, adjacent to the immediate north of the Town Hall, was agreed to. Authority was given for Mr. James Ashforth the newly appointed inspector, to ibe supplied with a traffic warrant. . In connection with the recent "accident to Supt. Slinn. and Fireman Button, the Committee recommended to Council that the action of Deputy-Supt Doran in entering the burning building and rescuing Supt. Slinn and subsequently applying methods of resuscitation, be brought under the notice of the Royal Humane Society with a view to having the Deputy: Superintendent's action suitaibly recognised. It is the opinion of tihe Brigade members who "weVe present at the fire that it was only owing to Mr. Doran'a courage and promptitude that a fatality was averted Cr. Meldrum asked that if the Society should fail to recognise the action of Mr. Doran' some suitable under the.Seal of the Council should be made. The Mayor agreed that this should be done. >. . ENGINEER'S RiEPORT. The Engineer reported that some 60 chains of footpaths along ,~<Birdwood BeaiU'e'hap and Malone roads had received the first coat of emulsified: ibitumen. Building permits -were issued as follows:—Dwellings in wood, 24, value- £23,045; dwellings in brick and concrete 2, value £1910; other J buildings 1, value £300; garages 8, value £280; sheds and outbuildings 4, value. £55; additions and alterations 7, value £530. Total value £26,120 Traffic —Patrol has been carried out regularly during the month. 18 casse of by-law -infringement were heard in the Magistrate's Court and convictions obtained in 17 instances. The existing court, which was laiS down; by the borough staff last year also received one coat of Colfix. £8000 piTEMPIiOTMENT IjOAN, Section 2 formation Old Wainui Road —All heavy excavation work has been completed, and-rtne carriageway trimmed to sub-grade level for a length of 10 J chains. 6 chains of trimming has yet to be done to complete. The fillings on the Waiwetu and Little AwamoitTz streams have been built out and the toes of fillings protected. Some 300 feet of concrete kerbing has been constructed on the western side and 100 feet on eastern side of road. A start will be made to lay soiling this ■week.
