HUTT v. INSTITUTE.

Fine weat&er marked the dpening of the season. The late rain had made the wicket easy, consequently when the toss of the coin favoured McGirr, the local side took first strike. The outfield was in splendid condition and with the wicket playing true conditions were all in favouT of the batsmen.. Matters did not open too promisingly for HutTt, Boss being caught in the slips with the total at six and Birch falling to a catch, behind the wickets when the scoTe was 14. Lees and Biggar put on 28 for the third wicket when the former was bowled. McGirr filled the vacancy and although not too comf ortaJb-le for a coutple of overs, soon settled* down to a solid partnership with Brggar.Th.e efforts of these'batsmen put a different complexion on. the game, the partnership producing one hundred tmd twenty three runs, 'before Biggar was dismissed, for. .an in valuable innings of 70.. The outgoing katsmair&ad played very solidly for hi* runs. Aldersley joined McGirr who was punishing all 'bowlers, being particularly severe, on Henderson. | Tho Hutt skipper reached his century with a four off the left hander at the same time presenting a difficult chance (his first) to the fieldsman. Aldersley rattled on 37 in quick time, eventually being bowled by Henderson. Phillips joined McGirr who was having a 'dip' at everything being ultimately eaug&t off Demips<tor. The Hutt captain had compiled 144 in a little over two hours, his breezy batting being greatly appreciated by the fair muster of spectators/ Phillips (23) and Warm's (14, not out), were the only others to secure douible figures. Tho innings closed at 6.15 p.m with the total at 310, when stumps w«to^ drawn. Detailed scores are as follows :-r-HUTT.—-Firet Innings. B. R. -Ross, c. Foley, b. Henderson. 5 A. Hutt'stotal of 310 runs was a good performance for. a first of the season match. At one stage matters did not look at all promising when th|*e good batsmen in Ross, Birch and Lees had boon sent back to fche pavilion for 42 runts. With 'the advent of McGirr the score (board began to sSro-w an improvement, the total mounting siteadily until the dismissal of Brggar. MeG-irr's innings was his best effort for the last tiwo or three seasons in cldb erick&t. Apart from Foloy's. first over, in. which he appeared to bo unctfrnf ortable, the batsman was on top of the. bowling throughout his sparkling iiminigs. Two six?ers, a five, and twenty-two fours were noted in his total of 144, Biggar's 70 was a solid ijerformaneo which had a big bear ing on Hfitt 'is final total. This batsman.'looked well set for "a ocutury w*lien he had a dip at a straight ball and missed. Phillips justified his promotion to. the seniors- His twenty-three runs wero made by good batting most of the shots being -well timed and along the carpet. Frank Warnes also batted very freely; unfortunately he could not got anyone to stay with Jbim.

Congratulations to N"ed Lockctt upon getting a century at long last. His was a vigorous knock which took all the sting out of the Varsity attack. The colt G-ower was content to keeip Jiia end up while Lockett was piling iip the score. A good batsman, this boy, with a rock like defence. Towards the latter part of the innings he began to" open out demonstrating 'that he can "free up" if necessary. Pegler, Heaps and Jndd batted nicely,

the two former having to face the bowling-at its- best.

'Sissons, a colt in. the Junior C's isanother batsman who is developing the

right way.

- Tom Langford is early on. the jab again—7 wickets for 8 and 2 for 10, and 42 with the bat, are good performances for a fast match. He was ably assisted by I>ooley, 3 for 8 and 2 for 17. ' ' : '
