DAFFODILS AT THE HUTT SPRING SHOW

A KBVIEW Or THE OUTSTANDING

BLOOMS

(By C. E. Btrckingham).

There :wore many fine flowers to foeseen at the recent Spring Show of the Hutt Valley Horticultural.Society with the added attraction of the New Zealand National Society's classes. As the prizo list hes already been published, I will give my opinion of what I consider tie real outstanding blooms. " ■ ■

In the Yellow Trumpets, one called "Aussie," was a distinct new breax in colour, soft luminous yellow of splen-

did form and substance. I predict a great future for tJiia variety. Other outstanding yeljows were Dawson City, Eenawn, Lord Roberta and Gold Doist, another good new one.

Among the White Trumpets, "Beersheba" is very outstanding and is now getting acclimatised as it is shown better each year. Two other good ones are Nevis and White Emperor.

In the class for BicolouT Trumpets, one called "Tapin" is a real beauty, of splendid quality and balance. Every grower will have this when the price is a little less. Armistice ia another Bi.colour of -splendid form- and -quite esesntial to exiibitors. Conqueror, one of the older varieties, is also still one of the best. ;

Among the IncompaTaibilis Class' there were many new ones shown and this is the class where the greatest im■provement has been made during the past few years. . , /

With all due respect to the English and Australian raisers, I think the two best Bed Cup varieties that have been exhibited are Wellington and/Flashlightning, both raised by Mr. C. Goodson of Hawcra_, and another from the same raiser is Ked Wheel, somewhat midway between " the two former. I 'would .sooner have these three than any

other of this type that I have see-n. Other very fine flowers were Border Queen, D.. V. West, (both raised in Australia), and Hades, Killigrew, Martona, Yellow Poppy and Sweet Sixteen, Fortune is another very fine variety .but t'lid flowers were past their best.

The class of Barriis are generally a bit late so we do not see many at our shows but two good ones on show were St. Jivst and Lady Superior. In the classes for Leedsiis theTe were some very fine blooms and those that appealed to me were Thordis, Ijangdbm, Felspar, Fay and Tenedos, and among the small cup Leedsiis, Silver Plane. ; A very nice Jonquil Hybrid, is Golden Gdblet of form, and very deep yellow. \ In the class of Poetaz or Hybrid Polyanthus Narcissi, Glorious and Scarlet Gem aTe two very outstanding types. Another <slass ' which is always attra^ive .are^the D 4 quible,lTjaxicissi. Ttose that were outstanding were Mary Copeland, a beautiful wew. type, pure wMte witii bright red showing through, the •centre.. Other good ones were Eoyal Sovereign, Inglescombe Plibenix and Golden Kose. There were many fine new seedlings on exhibition, but as they were mostly shown ainder numbers which, are not always traceable iby the would-bo Ibuyers, I will not make any special mention of them, as I prefer to wait till they liave a name on tiean. All tie aibove mentioned I can recommend to any grower who wants first-class stttff.
