The Hutt News THURSDAY SEPTEMBER. 25, 1930. RAILWAY MATTERS.

The unwelcome news of the en^ tire cancellation of the Sunday trains as from the end of _ this month will come as a surprise t© many local residents, more especially those who acting on the belief that a more or less adequate railway service for seven days in the week would always continue, have built their homes in the upper portions of'the Valley. To the residents of Lower Hutt and Petone the cessation of what has for years been a more or less inadequate railway service on Sundays will of course be a matter of indifference, though there are many who prefer to travel in comfort by rau. to facing the difficulties of obtaining a seat in an overcrowded bus, while the time occupied in the long and tedious deviation through the Petone suburb is a vexation of spirit to Lower Hutt dwellers. The action of the Railway Department in this, as in many other instances, is a matter for surprise, for it has been generally understood that this was practically the only suburban line that is paying expenses, and if that is so, there is no necessity for this drastic action, which as already stated will be the cause of much inconvenience and annoyance to those whose homes are outside the radius served by what must be admitted to be an excellent system of buss. But the people of this Dominion are apparently beyond the stage to which any attempt is made to understand the* vagaries of the Railway, and some other, departments, and placidly accept, without protest any sort of treatment meted out to them by the power-s that be In connection with Railway matters it will be remembered that some years ago, when the new line was projected on the eastern side of the valley, promises were made that the line would within a short period be extended from Waterloo to join the mam line at Silverstream. Options for the purchase of the land necessary to give effect to the project were secured^ and all concerned looked confidently forward to the time when those options would be exercised and the, railway extension scheme proceeded with. But much water has passed under the bridge since that time* and nothing has been done, or so far as can be at present seen, is likely to be done. We learn that the Hutt County Council in a cheerful and optimistic spirit is taking steps to interview Ministers oil the matter, and delegates from this body will endeavour to obtain an authoritative reply as to the route to be adopted when, or if, the extension is carried out. We confess that we are not sanguine as to the results of the County's action, which however is Highly to be commended. Both the matters above referred to are subjects which might well have been engaging the attention of the Progress League, had that once live body not gone into a protracted retirement. .

The memiber for the district, Mr. WalteT Nash, has received word that the Minister has approved ,of x a substantial grant for the erection of workshops at Petone Technical School.
